Ab Juni gibt es eine Audre-Lorde-Straße in Berlin

Die afroamerikanische Dichterin und Aktivistin Audre Lorde war oft in Berlin. Sie gab Lesungen und Uni-Seminare und ermutigte schwarze Frauen, ihre Geschichte zu erzählen. 2024 wäre sie 90 Jahre alt geworden. Nun wird sie mit einer Straße gewürdigt.

Dagmar Schultz’s up-close and personal portrait Audre Lorde: The Berlin Years 1984-1992, co-written with Ika Hügel-Marshall, Ria Cheatom, and Aletta von Vietinghoff (who is also the editor) takes us into the private and public life of the poet, activist, teacher, humanitarian, whose life-affirming outlook remains evermore important today. Audre Lorde was a graduate of Hunter College High School and Hunter College in New York City, and a Distinguished Professor of English at the college from 1981 to 1986.

On August 8th, at the occasion of the 25th anniversary of May Ayim's death, about 150 persons celebrated in Berlin the publication of the book May Ayim. Radical poet, Gentle rebel eds. Ika Hügel-Marshall, Nivedita Prasad, Dagmar Schultz.

Previously unpublished poems and texts by May Ayim as well as personal memories of May from family members in Ghana, the USA and Germany and from colleagues and friends are completed with a large number of color photos. February 15, 2012: Audre Lorde - the Berlin Years 1984-1992 had its world premiere in the Panorama Programm of the 62nd International Berlin Film Festival.

In honor of Audre Lorde's legacy, Dagmar Schultz and Ika Hügel-Marshall toured widely in The United States in 2012 with the Audre Lorde Legacy Cultural Festival, i.e. a series of films about, and inspired by, Audre Lorde, as well as the film „Hope in My Heart. The May Ayim Story“ and a reading by Ika Hügel-Marshall from her auto-biography Invisible Women. Growing Up Black in Germany (Daheim Unterwegs. Ein deutsches Leben).

In 2013, Marion Kraft and Dagmar Schultz toured with Audre Lorde - the Berlin Years 1984-1992 in Canada and the United States. Download the information here.

2007: “Hope in My Heart – The May Ayim Story” by Maria Binder (distributed by Third World Newsreel) Dagmar Schultz was co-producer of the film. The film is on the life of the Ghanaen-German poet and activist May Ayim. An English selection of her poems and essays is available in the book “Blues in Black and White” published by Africa World Press.
